Born and raised in Johannesburg, my commitment to activism began at university when I became involved in student movements advocating for equitable access to education and better conditions for marginalized communities. After completing my diploma in internal auditing, I joined the MKYL, a prominent organization committed to advancing civil society’s role in democratic governance and human rights. As a program manager, I led advocacy campaigns focused on policy reform in areas like healthcare, education, and youth empowerment, particularly for the country’s rural and underprivileged populations. One of my most significant contributions was my leadership in the “Access for All” initiative, which aimed to expand access to quality healthcare services in remote regions of South Africa. Under my direction, the program succeeded in advocating for the allocation of government funds to establish mobile clinics and healthcare outreach programs in areas with limited infrastructure. My partnership with local communities and international organizations led to awareness campaigns that provided education on GBV prevention and support services for survivors. Tshepo Mohase
My name is Tshepo Victoria Mohase, and I am currently pursuing a National Diploma in Management Assistance while completing my internship at Phindani, a briquette manufacturing company. As an intern, I have been entrusted with a variety of administrative responsibilities, including compiling reports, managing correspondence, tracking performance data, and ensuring smooth communication across different departments such as production, packaging, and delivery. This experience has strengthened my organisation, communication, and problem-solving skills, while also helping me understand the importance of efficiency, accountability, and coordination in any institution—skills that I believe are equally essential in municipal governance. I joined the ASRI Municipal Government Oversight & Accountability Training because I am passionate about community development, ethical leadership, and the role of local government in improving people’s lives. I strongly believe that local municipalities play a key role in service delivery, and that transparent and accountable leadership is the foundation of development and trust between citizens and government. Through participation in this programme, I hope to deepen my understanding of municipal structures, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), and oversight mechanisms that ensure accountability in public institutions. I am inspired by the opportunity to grow my knowledge in governance, civic responsibility, and citizen engagement. My goal is to use what I learn not only to complete my internship successfully but also to contribute meaningfully to the communities I work in—whether in the public sector, non-profit organisations, or other community-focused initiatives. Zinhle Annah Maremba
I am a 28-year-old currently working as an Operations Manager in the Digital Marketing space. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Management and Governance at the University of Johannesburg. Witnessing how maladministration and service delivery failures erode trust in local government and undermine basic human dignity I found myself inspired to pursue my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Management & Governance, specialising in policy monitoring and evaluation, advanced human resource management, and public finance management. The public sector is the backbone of a just and equitable society, responsible for delivering essential services—when government institutions operate transparently and efficiently, they foster trust, spur economic growth, and ensure that resources reach those who need them most. A commitment to seeing the public sector function effectively is, therefore, a commitment to the common good and I find myself wanting to champion ethical governance and actively participate in civic processes so that are focused on ensuring that government remains responsive, inclusive, and empowered to serve the collective interest. I possess a diverse set of skills and experiences, from digital marketing, business analysis, public administration, and project management. Eager to connect with fellow young activists and see this program as an opportunity to deepen my technical oversight skills, expand my civic coalition, and co-create strategies that hold municipal leaders to account—ensuring every citizen’s right to basic services and ethical governance.
